"Don't ask the poor to pay for Nassau County's mistakes"
The Fight For Families Coalition, established in 1999, is composed of more than 140 of Nassau's health and human service community based organizations representing youth, mental health, seniors, sustance abuse, child care and social services. Today, although the political environment has changed since 1999, the Coalition remains the leading voice on Nassau's human service issues. It has evolved into a planning coalition to ensure a functional, sustainable health and human service delivery system in Nassau County.
This new environment encouraged Coalition leaders to undertake a strategic planning process. The Coalition, with the assistance of an outside consultant, began to address moving the community based system of service forward in a time of diminishing resources and increased demand for services. The Coalition leadership is presently reviewing the presented recommendations.
The results of the apst year are striking reminder of the effectiveness of the Coalition: -The County Executive and Nassau Legislature added $4.5 milion to youth, sustance abuse, mental health, social service and child care agencies. Both the County Executive and Legislative leaders identified the Coalition as the reason for such a large increas in County spending for these services. -Following years of late payments and contracts the Nassau Coutny Executive held his second annual press conference in teh first week of January to announces the signing of contracts and the issuing of checks in a cery timely fashion. This streamlining savves non profits providers thousands in interest payments.
