Nutrition Outreach and Education Program

Nassau County Residents Needs to Know About NOEP!

WHAT IS NOEP?  NOEP is a Nutrition Outreach and Education Program.

The program is a state administered federal nutrition assistance program governed by Federal Law.  The program is accessible to U.S. and non-U.S. Citizens.  Immigrants need not be afraid to apply.  If they are eligible they will not get a Public Charge.

WHO ARE NOEP’S AND WHAT DO THEY DO?   NOEP’s are coordinators, who assist low-income (potentially eligible) households with the Food Stamp application process that will determine which households may qualify for food stamp benefits and their estimated Food Stamp allotment.

WHO ADMINISTERS THE PROGRAM? (Food Stamps)?  The United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) administers the program at the national level in New York State and the Office of Temporary & Disability Assistance (OTDA) oversees the local administration of the Food Stamp Program.

HOW CAN FOOD STAMPS HELP INDIVIDUALS/FAMILIES AND THE COMMUNITY? Every time an individual/family spends a food stamp dollar $1.84 is generated into the community and the economic empowerment of the community is increased.  Every time an individual/family is accepted for food stamps their purchasing power increases, enabling that family to buy nutritious food that is necessary for good health.

In 2007-08, the Health and Welfare Council’s NOEP enrolled over 1,400 households in the Food Stamp Program, resulting in $3,422,400 in Food Stamp Benefits, which contributed to $6,297,216 in economic activity in Nassau County!

WHERE CAN AN INDIVIDUAL/FAMILY FIND A NOEP IN THIS COMMUNITY?
