Smart Government for Smart Families Coalition

Through funding from The Horace Hagedorn Family Foundation and Unitarian Universalist Veatch  Program at Shelter Rock, the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island leads the Smart Government for Strong Families Coalition (SGSF).  Leadership from Suffolk’s health and human service organizations came together early in 2007 to form the Smart Government for Strong Families Coalition to address common issues related to contracting with Suffolk County government.  For many agencies, the process of contracting with Suffolk County has an impact on how services are delivered - making it difficult to do business.

Coalition members are working toward improved contract and payment systems for those agencies that are funded by and/or contracted with Suffolk County.  The Coalition’s longer term purpose is to strengthen and sustain an effective partnership between government, non-for-profit, and other service providers on behalf of all Suffolk County residents.  The Coalition believes that more efficient and effective policies and procedures will benefit all partners and will ultimately enhance the level of services agencies provide to the community.

The Coalition expanded from a 10 member steering committee to an alliance of more than 90 not for profit agency members that collectively represent over 55 million dollars in County contracts used to serve those most in need in Suffolk County.
